Founded by two women, Andy Royal and Jody Berens, who have been directly affected by the death of a close friend from cancer, Singleton Moms became a non-profit organization in November of 2006.
Singleton Moms provides volunteer household services and financial support (i.e. mortgages, rent, and utilities) to single mothers who are receiving Chemotherapy/ Radiation or recovering from other cancer related treatment or surgery. Through their personal experiences, Royal and Berens, found that aid based organizations are very few and far between. When a single mother is diagnosed with cancer and must undergo Chemotherapy/Radiation or surgery, in most cases, they cannot work. This creates an incredible financial hardship for them. Moreover, their energy is depleted and even the simple chores of cleaning their homes and making dinner for their children become strenuous and overwhelming.
Research shows that stress weakens the immune system. Singleton Moms looks to relieve daily stresses that women face while fighting cancer, so that these mothers have the best chance at recovery. Singleton Moms provides resources, such as well balanced prepared meals, house cleaning, child care, and financial assistance in the form of paid utility bills, gas cards, car repairs, medical co-pays, prescription medications etc.
The organization fully supports the critical aspect of research and study in cancer treatment and prevention, but believes it is extremely important to also provide direct assistance to those who need help NOW. By providing a support network to ailing single women with dependent young families, Singleton Moms is filling a much needed gap within our community
