Vote for us at Chase Community Giving

Last year Chase created an entirely new approach to corporate philanthropy. The program, Chase Community Giving, let people decide where Chase donated $5 million. This year Chase Community Giving is back to give away another $5 million, and YOU can help decide which 200 local charities receive donations.

Support Us Chase Community GivingChase Community Giving will donate $250,000 to the Charity receiving the most votes, $100,000 to each of the four runner-up Charities, and $20,000 to each of the remaining top 195 Charities receiving the most votes at the end of the month long program.

Votes have been coming in for Singleton Moms but we need many more to be in for a chance to win a $100,000 donation or to keep us in the running to win $20,000. If you have a Facebook account and haven't already done so (thank you very much if you have!), we ask that you spend less than 5 minutes and a few clicks voting for Singleton Moms, and then share your enthusiasm with your friends.

A donation from Chase can make a huge difference to the lives of single mothers with cancer in your community. We currently help 8 moms a month, but due to the economic climate our donations are down and we are in danger of having to reduce that number from 8 to 4. Naturally that means our waiting list that currently has 12 moms will only get longer. A sizable donation like this from Chase would mean that we can continue to help 8 moms a month, possibly more, and start reducing our waiting list. You can read more about this on our website.

To vote, go to the Singleton Moms Chase Community Giving page, LIKE the page, VOTE and then SHARE with your friends.

You can MAKE a difference.  Voting is open until 9pm Monday 12th July - Please vote before then.

Chase will announce the winning charities on 13th July - we will, of course, keep you posted!

Care Coordinator Youland with Mom Angel and her daughters

Kelly - Peoria

Kelly, 35, feels extremely blessed just to be alive. When originally diagnosed on October 21, 2008 with stage 4 colon cancer she was given 3 months to live. After an extremely aggressive surgery a month and a half later she and her three children moved in with her parents. “It has been rough on my parents having to take care of all of us.” said Kelly. Her dad recently had quadruple bi-pass surgery and has chronic stomach problems. “Sometimes my mom will wake up in the middle of the night to both me and my dad getting sick.”

Kelly’s mom is a very strong woman with an incredibly positive attitude. “She is always there for me, telling me not to worry because everything has worked out OK so far.” Kelly said “I have my three babies to fight for.”

Kelly found out about Singleton Moms from a friend she met at Chemotherapy. “Vicki and I became quick friends,” Kelly said, “she told me about this amazing group that was helping her. I looked you up on line and knew you were what I had been looking for. Singleton Moms has been an absolute God send to my family.”

The steroids that Kelly has been receiving have made her gain weight, but since receiving Singleton Moms meals she has been losing weight, and she credits the meals. “Those meals are so good!” She says. Kelly never wanted to think about what was going to be for dinner, but now she takes out two dinners at a time from the freezer. “The Turkey Chili and Turkey Meatloaf with Sweet Potato fries are awesome. I am so grateful to get such healthy meals. It is good for everyone in the family. We look forward to them.” Kelly is also amazed by the $300.00 a month Singleton Moms applies toward her electricity, it really helps out and is a huge contribution to her family.

When asked how her treatment was going now Kelly said, “Well, I got a short remission in 2009 but by October I knew it was back.” Kelly has been receiving a very aggressive Chemotherapy since that time but has recently had to “take a break” because of a very painful “Chemo-rash” that has developed on the front of her body.

“Taking a break scares me because it feels like I’ve stopped fighting”, she said. Though she remains extremely positive and says “There are always miracles.” Her doctors have told her she can begin again on July 12th.

In the meantime, Kelly has been very active in the Chase Giving Campaign on Facebook and has even recruited her 13 year old daughter to help get votes for Singleton Moms. “It is my way of being able to help out. There is no reason someone shouldn’t vote.” Says Kelly “I am very grateful for the help I have received from Singleton Moms and if this is how I can give back then I will.”

Board Member Introduction

Susan Gallagher-Crawford - Vice President

Susan Gallagher-CrawfordSusan Gallagher-Crawford was a single mother once and can empathize with many of the emotional, domestic, and financial challenges other single mothers face. And while she can’t relate to the stress of battling cancer as a single mother, she knows her expertise and compassion can help Singleton Moms.

As an Acquisition Executive with American Express, Susan consults with non-profit organizations and medium-sized corporations on expense management best practices. She has attended classes and seminars at ASU Lodestar Center for Philanthropy & Non Profit Innovation, and as Singleton Moms’ Board Vice President, she utilizes her skills to help Singleton Moms with grant writing, fundraising, and other tasks, such as seeking in-kind donations.

An Arizona native and Avondale resident, Susan was first introduced to philanthropy 20 years ago while working for The Center for Sports Medicine & Orthopedics, which, at the time, served as The Phoenix Suns team physicians.

“I believe that community support is essential in our society,” Susan said. “When I learned about Singleton Moms, I felt I could make a difference. My biggest goal is to help elevate these brave moms’ quality of life, no matter what their circumstances are.”

Susan said she is most impressed with Singleton Moms’ ability to provide resources and support that no other non-profit provides.

“There is a tremendous need for Singleton Moms’ services locally and nationwide. Our volunteers truly help with the day-to-day tasks that can be overwhelming. These moms are not able to get this type of support from the larger non-profits, not to say they are not helping, but their focus is on research and cures for cancer. Our focus is on the daily living needs and challenges while a parent is battling cancer,” she said.

Just as the need for donors is great, Susan said Singleton Moms is always seeking active volunteers.

“Like any non-profit, we have a large “Wish List,” and there are so many ways you can help. We need committed volunteers who can jump in and go with it! Be proactive, be an advocate for the parents and children. Just know the families in your community are depending on you to help them in many ways, and once you make the commitment and see the relief, hear the joy and happiness, that is the reward! That is what it is all about.”

When she’s not working, taking classes, or volunteering, Susan enjoys spending her spare time with her husband and three children. She also loves to indulge in a sweet hobby – baking.

Big or Small Everyone Can Make a Difference...

Pam Engle, a pre-school teacher from Legacy Classical Christian Academy found out about Singleton Moms through My Dinner Kitchen.  She was so moved by the organization that she created a fundraiser for her students to participate in.

Each child raised money from people by doing chores.  These little ones raised $50 for Singleton Moms and prepared artwork with special messages. We are so grateful!

Finally, something to smile about

Mom Susan and staff at dentish

Susan is smiling for the first time in many years. She was on service with Singleton Moms from February 2009 thru December of 2009. She had always had problems with her teeth and chemotherapy only made the situation worse. After she was done with her treatment and declared cancer free, Dr. Andrew Peterson of AMP Dentistry in Ahwatukee agreed to help Susan after one of his employees shared her story with him. Since then there have been many appointments but everything was more than worthwhile; Susan finished the 5 month process in June. She is eternally grateful to Dr. Peterson and his entire staff. “I never thought I would be able smile this wide or laugh without feeling self conscious”, says Susan, “I truly get to start over with a new lease on life.”

Resources are a wonderful help to our moms. Dentists, Orthodontists, Lawyers, an Eye Glass store, Carpet Companies, and a Veterinarian have come on board to help our moms. If you have a service to offer please contact andy@singletonmoms.org to be added to Michelle's Phonebook. Services may be tailored to just one mom or many. All services offered to our moms are done pro-bono and no expense is ever incurred by our moms.
